LED designed a 30,000 sf HIV Clinic in Mombasa, Kenya, as an addition to an existing medical center. The new clinic provides adult and pediatric AIDS/HIV wards, HIV testing center, maternal-child care center, laboratories, pharmacies, administrative offices, staff and support areas. LED performed extensive interviews and worked closely with medical staff to determine the spatial requirements for this clinic whose scope was unprecedented in the region. We devoted careful attention to providing shade structures and natural ventilation, both for cooling purposes and to reduce the significant risk of patient-to-patient TB transmission. With 12,000 enrolled patients, Bomu has quickly become the largest non-governmental HIV care provider on the coast of Kenya, and serves as a model of HIV clinic design. LED’s services were provided pro bono.
